Ford’s struggles with recalls is continuing. Earlier this year, the U.S. auto giant issued recalls for 4.2 million vehicles – second only behind Fiat Chrysler, which has recalled a jaw-dropping 7.7 million vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported.
According to news sources, Ford has issued a recall of most of its Focus models built at its Michigan factory over a seven-year period. The company said it’s recalling 1.5 million Ford Focus vehicles because a valve can cause engines to malfunction.
Ford said the affected Focus models have an engine valve that can stick in the open position, which can damage fuel tanks and make the fuel gauge give inaccurate readings. The valve malfunction can also cause stalling that could potentially cause vehicle crashes.
The recall period covers the compact Focus cars equipped with 2-liter gas-direct injection engines and built between 2012 and 2018. A Ford spokesperson said the recall includes the majority of the Focus models between those years. The recalled vehicles were put together before April of last year at the company’s assembly plant near Detroit.
Most of the recalled cars (about 1.3 million) were sold in the U.S., with the rest sold in Mexico and Canada.
An earlier Ford recall of 2 million pick-up trucks cost the company about $140 million, the company said.
In March, the auto icon recalled 1.4 million midsize cars because their steering wheels could detach.
