Tesla recalls 6,000 vehicles over loose bolts

On Behalf of | Jun 2, 2021 | Auto Recalls |

Electric automaker Tesla is voluntarily recalling 5,974 vehicles over potentially loose brake caliper bolts, which could lead to lost tire pressure increasing the chances for a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall May 25, affecting the following Tesla vehicles:

  • 2019-2021 Model 3
  • 2020-2021 Model Y

Tesla says it became aware of the issue last December when a 2021 Model Y was reported without a fastener on a rear brake pad. A spokesperson says the company addressed potential assembly issues at that time. Tesla says, however, that it has not received any reports of injuries or crashes related to the potential defect.

The carmaker will replace or tighten the bolts for free. However, the NHTSA says the company has not provided a timeline for sending notices to owners. Vehicle owners are encouraged to contact the company at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-21-33-002.

Other recent Tesla recall notices

The number of affected cars in this notice is modest compared to the hundreds of thousands of owners impacted by other recalls in the past three years. Those include:

  • Touch screen failures: Requested by the NHTSA in Feb. 2021. This impacts 134,951 Model S and Model X vehicles in the U.S. and 36,126 cars in China.
  • Faulty suspension: In 2020, the company recalled 9,500 Model Xs and Model Ys in the U.S. and nearly 50,000 in China.
  • Power steering component defect: In 2018, Tesla recalled 123,000 Model S vehicles.

To find out more about these recalls and others, owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to the agency’s website.
