German automaker Mercedes is known far and wide for the reliability and safety of its high-end automobiles. But the manufacturing behemoth recently issued a pair of recalls over safety issues that will undoubtedly concern consumers.
One of the recalls involves passenger-side airbags. Indicators in the recalled vehicles can show that the airbags have been activated – when, in fact, the safety devices have been disabled.
The problem plagues some 2018 and 2019 C-Class and GLC models, including crossovers, coupes, crossover coupes, convertibles, sedans, hybrids and some AMG performance models. All told, 16 models are included in the recall that will see 104,663 vehicles in the United States returned by owners to dealerships for needed repairs.
The safety issue can apparently be resolved by reinstallation of audio software, a news report states. The recalls are slated to begin early in the new year.
The second Mercedes recall is over a separate safety issue that involves a smaller number of vehicles spread out over an even larger group of models. Seatbelt sensors might not detect that a buckle has been fastened. The failure means that the seatbelt’s pre-tensioners would not be activated in crashes.
The second recall affects only 5,433 vehicles sold in the U.S. Carbuzz.com reports that affected models include Maybach S560 and S650 limousines, plus the S450, S560, AMG S63 and S65 in various C-Class, E-Class and S-Class configurations.
Dealers are being told to replace the seatbelt buckles in recalled vehicles. Those recall repairs will begin in late January, according to the news report.
