Car dealer arrested for odometer fraud

On Behalf of | Nov 5, 2018 | Dealer Fraud |

A used car dealer manager was recently arrested for tampering with a vehicle’s odometer.  In this case, the 37-year-old manager sold a 2013 Chevrolet Cargo Van, claiming that it had 159,000 miles on it. In reality, the van had more than 303,000 miles – a fact hidden from the vehicle’s buyer.

According to a news report, the vehicle’s mileage was altered on both the odometer and the title. The manager also reportedly altered a title designation that indicates that the true mileage is unknown.

In addition, investigators discovered that the manager had a fake dealer’s plate on his vehicle – one made of laminated paper.

He was been arrested and charged with odometer fraud, fraudulent schemes, tampering with a public record, forgery and more.

The article on his arrest points out that there are a few steps to take if you are considering buying a used vehicle, including:

  • Ask for ID to make sure the seller is the owner listed on the title
  • Ask for vehicle maintenance records
  • Check VIN numbers on door frame and dash to see if they match
  • Look for signs that either VIN has been altered or replaced
