Recall for Ford Fusion and Escape for Rollaway Risk

Ford recently announced a recall for over 500,000 Escape and Fusion vehicles for rollaway concerns.  The affected vehicles include the 2013 and 2014 Ford Escape and 2013 through 2016 Ford Fusion.  Ford discovered that a bushing that attaches to the shifter cable can degrade and detach.  When the shifter cable bushing detaches, the vehicle may not be in the gear showing on the gear selector.

For instance, a vehicle with a detached shifter cable bushing may appear to the driver to be in park, but is actually in neutral. In this situation, a driver could place the vehicle in what is showing as park, turn the car off, remove the key or key fob and exit the vehicle but the car could still move. In this situation, the vehicle could roll into another car or worse, run over the driver or another person.  Although Ford claims that no one has been injured as a result of this defect, other vehicles, such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, have been in rollaway incidents that have resulted in death.

The recall will be performed at Ford dealerships on affected vehicles for free.  If you have a 2013-2016 Fusion or 2013-2014 Escape, you should go to safercar.gov and enter in your Vehicle Identification Number to see if your specific vehicle has been recalled.  If it is under recall, get your vehicle in to the dealership for the recall repair as soon as possible, and until the recall repair is performed, set your parking brake everytime you put the vehicle in park.  If the recall repair does not fix the problem with your vehicle, or if you had your vehicle in for this issue multiple times before the recall was issued, you may want to consider speaking to a lemon law attorney.
