Ford issues steering wheel recall

If you thought your automaker would never steer you wrong - think again. Ford Motor Company issued a recall recently for 1.4 million vehicles due to a risk of steering wheel detachment, according to the Wall Street Journal. The recall affects the 2014-2018 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ midsize cars in North America. If you own a vehicle covered in this recall, it is important to understand your rights as a consumer and how to replace the defective steering wheel.

What's the problem?

This recall is related to defective steering wheel bolts on Fusion and MKZ models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began investigating complaints of loose steering wheels in October. One owner even reported that their steering wheel fell off while attempting to make a turn. The defective steering wheels reportedly are to blame for a pair of accidents and one injury before the recall.

How is it being fixed?

If you own a 2014-2018 Ford Fusion or Lincoln MKZ, you can bring it to the dealership for a no-cost replacement. Unfortunately, Ford is no stranger to recalls and settlements lately. The Takata airbag recall affected various Ford models; and in 2017, Ford settled a class action lawsuit related to faulty clutches in their Fiesta and Focus models.

What other options do I have?

Taking your car in for a repair and replacement may not be your only choice in this recall. Car owners in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan have many options when seeking recourse for defective auto parts and recalls including tort claims litigation and class action lawsuits.

Where can I go for more information?

As a consumer, you have a right to purchase products that are free of defects, especially when that product is something you rely on every day like your car. For more information related to this recall, you can talk to your dealership, visit the NHTSA website or speak with a lemon law attorney.
